Growth Scan & A Glimpse Of Baby!

I am into week 33 now and tummy is definitely getting heavier, movement of baby is stronger and at times, you can actually see the tummy poking out! The feeling of a being inside your tummy is just amazing! I know I am gonna missed it when the baby delivers. On 2 Nov, I made an appointment with another gynae (the same one who did my detail scan) to do a baby's growth scan and most of all, to get a 4D view of what my little prince will look like.. hehehe... I am all excited! Prior to the appointment, I have been talking to the baby, asking him to behave and let daddy/mummy have a glimpse of him during the scan. I hope he behaves~ The growth scan went on smoothly, baby is growing well inside, not much movement.. hence we did not catch much in the 4D scan..aiyoh... he is sleeping most of the time leh.

So, who does baby resembles?? Hubby and I both thought he got daddy's nose :p

Skin changes during pregnancy

During pregnancy, our skin may change due to hormonal increased. Whilst common pregnancy skin changes poses no health problems, it is adviseable to always talk to your gynae if your skin is inflamed, blistered, or you have a rash, irritation or itchiness that lasts more than a couple of days.

Following are a list of common skin changes arising during pregnancy :
- Chloasma (pigmentation changes on your face and neck)
- Linea nigra (dark line running up your tummy)
- Glowing skin
- Spider veins
- Spots and acne
- Stretch marks
- Chafing
- Sensitive, irritated skin
- Rashes and itchiness
- Intense itching

Chloasma (pigmentation changes on your face and neck)
Also known as the "mask of pregnancy", chloasma has the appearance of brown patches of pigmentation on the forehead, cheeks, and neck. On darker-skinned women, they appear as lighter patches. It's caused by the increased production of melanin, the tanning hormone, which protects the skin against ultraviolet light.

Exposure to sunlight will darken the patches, making them more obvious, so protect your skin with a high factor sunscreen (SPF15 or more) and/or hat whenever you go out. If you feel the patches look unsightly, try blending in the colour with a tinted foundation. They will begin to fade within three months of your baby's birth.

>>> I'm lucky that I did not get it. As a prevention, I apply sunscreen religiously everytime before I'm out of the house :)

Linea nigra (dark line running up your tummy)
This is a dark, vertical line, up to a centimetre wide that appears down the middle of your stomach, often crossing the navel. It tends to appear around the second trimester. It is caused by pigmentation in the skin where your abdominal muscles stretch and slightly separate, to accommodate your baby as it grows.

This line of pigmentation will fade within a few weeks of delivery, although you may need to give it a gentle rub to remove any dry skin. You will notice that other areas with pigmentation - such as your nipples, moles and freckles - may darken too, but this will also fade with time.

>>> I'm a 'victim' of linea nigra on my tummy!

Glowing skin
The "bloom" or "glow" of pregnancy is not just a saying. Your skin retains more moisture during pregnancy, which plumps it up, smoothing out any fine lines and wrinkles that you may have. The pinkish glow that makes you look radiant is due to increased levels of blood circulating round your body. This may also make you feel slightly flushed sometimes.

The downside of this effect is that you may look puffy from water retention and that any red patches that you already have on your face may become more visible.

Don't try to cut down on drinking water - your body needs fluids - but rest as much as you can. Any red patches will eventually calm down once you've given birth, but if you want to hide them, try using a moisturising foundation.

>>> I have friends saying that I seem to look more radiant during the pregnancy, perhaps its the "glow" bah! And knowing the importance of keeping hydrated, I drank about 2 litres of water daily, good mummy right? heee..

Stretch marks
The thin reddish or brownish (depending on your skin colour) lines of stretch marks usually appear on the abdomen, breasts and thighs. They affect between 75 and 90 per cent of pregnant women and may appear as you put on more weight during pregnancy, causing the skin to stretch.

Higher levels of hormones also disrupt your skin's protein balance, making it thinner than usual. After pregnancy, the reddish or brown pigmentation in the stretch marks gradually fades, and the streaks become lighter than the surrounding skin. It can take some time for them to fade.

Some lucky women have more elastic skin than others, meaning they won't get stretch marks, but for most of us they are simply a fact of pregnancy. You can try to minimise them by avoiding putting on weight too quickly, rubbing oil or cream rich in vitamin E over your abdomen to keep it supple, eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins E and C, and in zinc and silica to help to keep your skin healthy.

A research review of creams for preventing stretch marks found only one study, based in Spain, which showed creams to be of benefit. This was by massaging with a cream called Trofolastin, containing the active ingredients Centella asiatica extract, alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) and collagen-elastin hydrolysates. This cream is currently unavailable in the UK.

>>> Oh well, the skin around my tummy was flawless up until the last few weeks!! As the baby grows, my tummy was stretched to the limit and it got itchy.. and that is when the stretch marks appears :(

Sensitive, irritated skin
Skin tends to become more sensitive during pregnancy, not only due to higher hormone levels, but because it has become more stretched and delicate. Soaps and detergents may suddenly cause irritation, or conditions such as eczema may become worse. Your skin may become more prickly than usual when exposed to sunlight.

Try to identify what could be causing your irritation - could it be your washing powder or a perfume that you use? Also, choose loose, cotton clothes and keep your body well-moisturised. Long soaks in a warm bath will dry out your skin so keep these to a minimum, or add bath oil that will help keep your skin supple. (But make sure you don't slip when you're getting in and out of the bath).

>>> My skin got more sensitive (itch) towards the end of the pregnancy..

Anvia's 2 Year Old Birthday Bash - 23 Sep 07

Today, we attended Anvia's birthday bash (in blue dress). Since the last time we met (in Jun), this is the 2nd time we catch up. Veron also went with her darling Dayna. The girls were so adorable, we all can't wait for my little prince to come out so they can all be playmates!

All about Breech

Usually a few weeks before birth, most babies will move into delivery position, with their head moving near the birth canal. If this does not happen, the baby's buttocks and/or feet, will be in place to be delivered first. This is called a breech presentation. Breech births occur in about 1 of 25 full-term births.

What are the different types of breech presentations?
Frank breech: The fetus' buttocks are aimed toward the birth canal and the legs stick straight up in front of the body. The feet are near the head.
Complete breech: The buttocks are down, with the legs folded at the knees and the feet near the buttocks.
Footling breech: One or both of the fetus' feet are pointing down and will come out first.

Footling breech

What causes a breech presentation?
The causes of breech presentations are not fully known. However, a breech birth is more common :

- In subsequent pregnancies
- In pregnancies of multiples
- When there is history of premature delivery
- When the uterus has too much or too little amniotic fluid
- In an abnormal shaped uterus or a uterus with abnormal growths, such as fibroids.
- For women with placenta previa

Can a breech presentation be changed?
The best time to try to turn a breech baby is between 32-37 weeks of pregnancy There are many different types of methods to use and all have different levels of success. Talk with your health care provider about which options they feel would be best for you to try.

Medical Techniques:
External Version: External version is a non-surgical method in which a doctor can help move the baby within the uterus. A medication to help relax the uterus might be given as well as an ultrasound exam, to better check the position of the baby, the location of the placenta, and the amount of amniotic fluid in the uterus. Gentle pushing on the lower abdomen can turn the baby into the head-down position. Throughout the external version, the baby's heartbeat will be checked closely so that if any problems should occur, the health care provider will stop turning immediately. Most attempts at external version are successful; however, as the due date gets closer this procedure is more difficult.

Chiropractic Care: The late Larry Webster, D.C., of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, developed a technique which enabled chiropractors to release stress on the pregnant woman's pelvis and cause relaxation to the uterus and surrounding ligaments. The relaxed uterus would make it easier for a breech baby to turn naturally. The technique is known as the Webster Breech Technique.

Natural Techniques:
The following two techniques often suggested by physical therapist, Penny Simkin, are things you can try at home for free, with no risks involved.

The Breech Tilt: Raise hips 12" or 30cm off the floor using large, solid pillows three times daily for 10-15 minutes each time. This is best done on an empty stomach, and at a time when your baby is active. Concentrate on your baby and not tensing your body, especially in the abdominal area.

Using Music: We know that babies can hear sounds outside the womb, so many women have used music or taped recordings of their voice to try to get their baby to move towards the noise! Headphones placed on the lower part of your abdomen, playing either music or your voice, has encouraged babies to move towards the sounds and out of the breech position.

No house?! @_@

As some of you may know, we have been staying at my parents' place since we got married in Sep'05. We finally purchased our house in May'06 but due to some circumstances, we did not start the renovation. Now that the baby is due in Dec and my parents' place is really too cramped with the new addition and a confinement (needs a room for herself), plus all the baby stuffs, its really high time to rush on the renovations!

Hmmm.. according to chinese old wives tales, there are alot of restrictions that a pregnant women should watch out for.. one of it is, no renovations at home?! So in order to proceed with the renovation, hubby and I came up with this arrangment - he will supervise the reno while I will accompany him in choosing of the materials/paints etc. He will go down to the site and take photos to show me the progress. Already working long hours, this additional 'work' will further tire him for sure! But no choice, daddy... jia you hor :)

So in Oct, we began negotiating the terms with our contractor. And finally began the work in Nov, which is only a month before my EDD!!

PS : opps, forgot to mention that my EDD is around 19 Dec 07 keke..

Our 2nd Year Wedding Anniversary - 18 Sep 07

Hubby and I went for a dinner to celebrate our anniversary tonight, we had a delightful dinner at Prego.. I took a tiny weeny sip of the wine he ordered :p
OOOHhhhh I missed it!! Dinner was great :)

Some pix of me - part 2

week 23 - 24 Aug 07

week 24 - 31 Aug 07 (6 months preggie!)

week 25 - 7 Sep 07 (here it is, I have finally ballooned, pix taken with my cousin Rene)

week 26 - 16 Sep 07 (I can't remember but I think it is around this time that I start my Prenatal Yoga class)

Scare

At around beginning of my 2nd Trimester (mid July), I realised that I have some discharge from the nipple, after some reading up, suspect it could be colostrum which is normal for pregnant women. So during my rountine check-up, I brought it up to my gynae casually. Thats what she thought as well but when she asked me if I have similar discharge before I was pregnant, I told her "yes".. vaguely remembered that I sight discharge a few years back. It was during one of the co check-up but the doctor then thought that it could be due to hormonal changed, wasn't anything abnormal and does not require further testing.

Well, because of my discharge prior my preggie, my gynae felt that I should go for a blood test and see if my Prolactin level is exceptionally high, she does not rule out that it could be Prolactinoma, which is a type of brain tumour!! If I really have it, then I cannot breast feed my baby and has to start treatment immediately I deliver but good news is, this is usually not life threathening and most of the time, oral medication can get it fix.

I felt like my world is tumbling down when I heard this...all sorts of silly thoughts flashes in front of me.. what if I could not get to see my baby, what if...I could not stop crying for days.. sob sob... hubby consoled that it could be nothing, apart from my quite-frequent migraine, I am still standing up strong, no fainting or any of the sort.

My blood test came back a few days later.. it was high, usually in the case of preggie women in 3rd trimester but I was only in my 2nd~
I was advised to go for a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) but the radiologist from Mt Alvernia advised to wait till I deliver to do it because I will need to take injections to dilate my blood vessel (so as to see clearer) which is not appropriate since I am preggie. And so the long wait.. of hoping.. of wishing that I am fine.

5th Month Detail Scan

On 2 Aug 07, I went for the 5th month detail scan. This scan is optional but usually recommended by most gynae and the purpose is to ensure that the baby's development is well, baby is normal...

Here's some pix to share~
